UPS orders e-cargo bikes from Onomotion

The e-cargo bike manufacturer Onomotion has gained another CEP service provider as a customer with UPS, which is using a total of ten new Onos in Hamburg and Cologne.

However, the parking garage operator Apcoa Parking Deutschland is also involved in the project, which, as reported, uses Onomotion e-cargo bikes itself. Apcoa cooperates with UPS and provides the space so that the logistics company can set up microdepots, where the delivered packages have to be temporarily stored before they are then delivered by e-cargo bike.

In Hamburg, UPS has already been using seven of the vehicles since the end of February. "The mobility revolution is not only an issue for private transport, but also for logistics in particular," says Anjes Tjarks, the Hanseatic City's Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition. "For long distances, we need to significantly strengthen rail, but for the first and last mile, CargoBikes are an ideal addition to make transport more sustainable, but also more efficient."

Details about the deployment in Cologne are not disclosed in the press release, but it must be three cargo bikes. Frank Jorgensen, president of UPS DACH, says that the company has been using cargo bikes in Hamburg since 2012 and has used the experience to steadily optimise its citiylogistics since then.

"Two big challenges are: finding the opportunity for a downtown micro depot and getting reliable operating equipment, meaning cargo bikes," Jorgensen says. "That's why the partnerships with Apcoa and Onomotion are key for us."

Onomotion informs that "in case of successful cooperation" an "extended use and scaling of the project" is to be tackled, but no figures are given.
