Hyundai Mobis: E-Corner modules for skateboard platform

Hyundai Mobis, an automotive supplier that is part of the Hyundai Motor Group, has unveiled an E-Corner module that integrates steering, braking, suspension and electric drive systems into one wheel, and is expected to serve as the base technology for a future platform that is expected to be released in 2023.

Hyundai Mobis says it will accept volume orders from automakers around the world as soon as reliability testing and a feasibility study for volume production are completed. The South Koreans are not yet giving technical specs on the E-Corner module. In a press note, they only say that the technology allows for 90-degree wheel rotation and easy design of different wheelbases. The former allows for both turning on the spot and moving sideways.

"The E-Corner module is an advanced technology that not many companies have had success with mass producing on a global scale," Hyundai Mobis shares. Competitors with similar approaches include Israeli startup Ree Automotive ("Ree Corner") or Hitachi and DeepDrive with their wheel hub motors.

Hyundai Mobis says it plans to create a skateboard module powered by four e-corner modules and equipped with autonomous driving capabilities by 2023, with the supplier aiming to build on this to provide a mobility solution for purpose-built vehicles (PBVs) by 2025.
