Evergrande NEV starts series production of the Hengchi 5 - again

Evergrande New Energy Vehicle, the e-car division of Chinese real estate group Evergrande, says it has started mass production of its first model, the Hengchi 5, with the second model, the Hengchi 6, to follow in the second half of 2023.

Although Evergrande NEV had started the pre-sale of the Hengchi 5 in July, it was not certain until recently whether series production would actually start. As late as mid-August, there had been rumours about ongoing financial difficulties and a possible takeover of Evergrande NEV by another carmaker, which Evergrande later denied. Since the denial, however, it had become quiet again around the company.

In fact, the company is now reporting back with the start of mass production of the Hengchi 5 on September 16 at its Tianjin plant, with deliveries scheduled to begin in October.

The catch: Evergrande had already announced the start of production in January - at that time, unit 00001 was built in turquoise. The aforementioned rumors were fueled, among other things, by reports that Evergrande had only built 200 units of the E-SUV within half a year.

Now, production is said to have scaled up to the point where it's actually possible to talk about mass production. Exact production rates aren't mentioned, but a published photo shows numerous vehicles in a parking lot - in turquoise, white and red.
